Maximo Park

"Our Velocity"

These dudes must eat a lot of sugar. How else can you explain the amount of ideas and energy they’re able to pack into three minutes? Every song has a steady, driving rhythm, which makes it easier to ride the wave storm of chord changes. But if you actually manage to ignore your natural inclination to shake and shimmy, you might notice how tight the band are as musicians. “Our Velocity” finds Maximo Park in their usual eighties Post-Punk/New Wave mode, but they manage to keep things interesting by never settling in one place. The nomadic nature of the music combined with Paul Smith’s bitter, but clever lyrics make for something more original than the genres that spawned them. These guys know how to make a catchy single, but they also have the incredible ability of packing a single song with an albums worth of material. If you missed the bands excellent debut A Certain Trigger, do yourself a favor and get it. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait until May before Our Earthly Pleasures is released in the U.S. The good news is that “Our Velocity” will probably keep you busy until then.
